Oh, Sleeper
When I Am God
3/5
Who It’s For: Christian hardcore kids?
Sounds Like: Norma Jean, Underoath, As Cities Burn
So, When I Am God is a pretty ambitious album title don’t you think? Oh, Sleeper must take them selves pretty seriously then. A solid debut effort in When I Am God will win Oh, Sleeper fans, but they are definitely not breaking the mold any time soon.
Featuring ex members of As Cities Burn, Terminal, and Between The Buried And Me, the band could have come up with a more unique sound. They heavily rely on their influences and it shows. The vocals of Micah Kinard are urgent enough to keep your attention, especially with the odd tuneful melody, but it can’t distract you from the screaming guitars (which aren’t a bad thing) and tight rhythms for long before you realize you’ve heard it all before.
What you’ll find in listening to When I Am God is a lot of Underoath meanderings (minus the electronic lace) and Norma Jean technical spasms. As far as metalcore goes, this is a decent sounding album. As far as an original sound goes, this is a good example of a band that needs to branch out.
