In Our Bedroom After The War
5/5
Who It’s For: Hopeless romantics and Indie lovers
Sounds Like: Pretty pop rock
Just in time for cold weather Stars are back with music that will war your heart. They have a knack for making love songs that aren’t cheesy. Now that they gained mainstream popularity with their last record there is more pressure on In Our Bedroom After The War to stand up to that praise.
They did best at not making the album feel boring or repeated at all. The soft love tunes could feel over done with this their third disc. Instead they have added new elements and new storylines to their music that makes it fresh. Tracks like “In Our Bedroom After The War” have that key story that makes Stars stand out above any regular crooner. Whereas on tracks like “The Ghost Of Genova Heights” there is a modern danceable feel and singer Torquil Campbell’s falsetto make it break up the quieter songs on the disc and make it memorable, while female singer Amy Millan’s voice sounds better then ever on the jazzy “My Favourite Book” and opener “The Night Starts Here.”
Of course there is that element of what Stars truly do best. Tracks like “Personal” are going to stand out to any Stars fan because you get both singers going back and forth combining all of the love and sadness and desperation that is real life.
The production and the variety offered on this disc shows that even though they have stayed busy during their break with side projects members of Stars have been even busier with this disc. It proves they can play with their sound and keep that art rock vibe alive. It’s still comfort music that feels private and personal to each listener, but it’s the type you want to share with everyone you know so you can all feel something.
