The Cult
April 12 2008
Sound Academy

When I first heard that The Cult were coming to town I laughed. I couldn’t imagine that anyone would want to see another 80’s has been band reunite, I mean really, who listens to The Cult anymore?

As I pulled up in front of the venue I was staggeringly impressed by the hoards of people who not only came to see this has been 80’s band reunite but who were excitedly standing outside in the pouring rain waiting to be patted down, checked over and I.D.’d just to enter the show.

Slowly I made my way through the rain, the cougars, the mullets and enough leather to create my own herd of cattle and entered the sardine packed club. When I realized how many people were actually in attendance I knew I was in for something a whole lot more than I bargained for.

After taking my place with the masses the lights slowly dimmed and the crowd went ballistic – those forty-something’s still remember how to scream! The band came out and immediately started playing “Nirvana” and although they sounded good and Ian Astbury was wearing his traditional fox tail, I was disappointed that Ian’s long mane wasn’t covered by his trademark bandana.

A few songs into the evening I was having a great time. Who knew that The Cult could sway such a stubborn and snobbish music fan such as myself? I was incredibly impressed that the band could not only still rock they held the audience’s attention and kept them on a rock n’ roll rollercoaster all night. The crowd jumped and danced to each tune and when “Sweet Soul Sister” started playing hands went up all over the venue and vehemently pumped during each chorus.

Playing all of their hits, a few new tunes and even an acoustic version of “Video Of Tiger In The Sun” The Cult entertained, rocked and even looked like they were having a great time as well.

With excitement, musicality and a whole lot of kick ass energy The Cult proved that even twenty years later they can still rock the house.
