The Draft
In A Million Pieces
4/5

This debut album by ¾ of Hot Water Music is not exactly what was expected. It seems that a lot of bands, when a founding member departs, find themselves exploring new sounds and directions. The Draft have chosen to stick with what they know, and what they know is dirty sounding melodic rock songs.

Not everything on In A Million Pieces sounds like that other band though. “Let It Go” plays with some off-beat rhythms and organs and “Wired” has a horn section. Just punchy enough, with melodic guitar leads that will leave you whistling, The Draft don’t leave any bases uncovered. Towards the end of the record is a beard-core bro-hymn co-written by Brian Baker (you know, Minor Threat, Dag Nasty, Bad Religion) that hasn’t left my head since my first listen.

The material on In A Million Pieces sounds like it would translate to sweaty non-pretentious dance party live, so here’s to hoping for a huge tour following the release of the album.

Knowing that this is what these guys came up with makes the sting of our departed HWM a little easier to swallow.
