Evans Blue Filling Hole In Canadian Music Collections
Canada’s known for supporting the newest trends in music and hopping on genre bandwagons before we even realize they’re the next big thing, except when it comes to the modern rock subgenre active rock. Granted we have our Nickelback’s and our 3 Days Grace’s, but we really had nothing to compare to Chevelle, Taproot or anything else that fit into that category…until now. Evans Blue could be the band that we can call our own in the genre that’s been huge for the past five years or so. But that being said, while we’re just learning about them in Canada, their debut album The Melody And The Energetic Nature Of Volume has already been hitting the Billboard charts hard in the U.S. and recently hit the number two spot in Poland, proving that sometimes we are a little behind on things.
Evans Blue didn’t go elsewhere first, that’s just the way it worked out.
“It w
as just the way things fell together. Sirius Satellite Radio played the single first and it all just went from there,” says drummer Darryl Brown (singer Kevin Matisyn, guitarists Parker Lauzon and Vlad Tanaskovic, and bassist Joe Putter round out the band).
The initial success of the album was yet another surprise for the band.
“I was amazed at our first week sales. We said it’s going to come out and it’s going to sell what it sells. We didn’t really think about it, it was less stressful that way.”
Their first single “Cold (But I’m Still Here)” easily holds its own in the modern rock arena and while they do have similarities to other bands, it’s not something they’re concerned about.
“Nowadays everything’s going to sound like something. It never really bothers us to be compared.”
Another song that will make them stand out is their cover of Sarah McLachlan’s “Possession.” The male vocals bring on a whole new take of an extremely popular song, but it takes awhile to realize what song you’re actually listening to. It’s something that seems to amuse Darryl.
“A lot of the time live, people sing along and have no idea what song they’re singing. They know they know it, but they don’t know what it is.”
While Evans Blue has a lot on their plate it seems the best way they can keep in touch with their fans is on MySpace.
“The amount of people that we talk to on a regular basis is totally beneficial. It definitely benefits the band.”
If you want to see Evans Blue, it might be awhile unless you want to hit one of their shows in the States. They’re going on tour with Taproot and then Trapt and Shinedown, something that the band is really excited about.
“I’ve followed Taproot since they came out. We’re all pumped, getting ready to go out on the road. I got my dream job and I get to see countries doing it.”
