Mod Club

A chill was in the air the night of the hottest show in town. Selling out The Mod Club in around 30 minutes, the flavour of the week, top of the rock charts hit-makers known as Hinder swaggered their way into the hearts of fans this night, with just the right support…

Birmingham, Alabama’s Lynam kicked things off in fine fashion this evening. The three brothers Lynam making up this rock squadron clearly have taken a few pages out of the musical and fashion guide books written by Motley Crue and Guns ‘N Roses, and just the musical guide book of Weezer. A great pop sensibility and rock n roll attitude is Lynam summed up in a sentence. Never letting a quiet moment settle, vocalist/guitarist Jacob Lynam was always strumming his guitar during his between song banter which revolved around beautiful women, getting drunk, and “your mom” jokes. With a stage show as tight as, well, family (pun intended), Lynam will not disappoint if you’re looking for an all out rocking good time without cares.

Up next is the band that once really wouldn’t have belonged even close to a show like this. Orange County, California’s Eighteen Visions was one the best metalcore bands around say, four to five years ago. They have since very much changed but you can still find old fans (like me) supporting them even though it is difficult at times. Defying cries of “sell out,” this band has persevered and graduated to a major label with a slightly hard edge rock sound that brings to mind Stone Temple Pilots in their prime. With just enough aggression, 18V deconstructed the Mod Club with their massive light show, staccato riffing, and soaring vocals. 18 Visions pretty much stole the show with their 45 minute support set. Although they didn’t venture into their catalogue past their major label debut Obsession, the set was still quite enjoyable. 18 Visions closed the set with “Tower Of Snakes,” giving the crowd a slight taste of what the old days of 18 V were all about! Oh those were the days…

Providing a solid rock show to close the night, Hinder’s hour plus set of was dynamic from start to finish. Charming the crowd with favourites from their new album Extreme Behaviour nothing was terribly extreme. Hinder made the ladies swoon and made the guys’ fists pump in the air. The climax was definitely the set’s closing number and the biggest song in the land these days, “Lips Of An Angel.” The crowd got what they wanted and they left with smiles on their faces.
