John Mayer
Continuum
4.5/5

To say that an artist’s sound has matured since their last album always seems slightly redundant. They’ve gotten older, haven’t they? That should mean maturity comes along with it. On Continuum, you could call it maturity in song writing, a willingness to be open or just John bringing his experiences with pop and blues together forming an album that has the best of both worlds.

The songs are varied, from lead single “Waiting On The World To Change,” which brings a slightly more pop aspect to the album, to “Gravity,” which is slower and more laid back, yet still keeps you interested.

Mayer also manages to keep each song sounding different. “The Heart Of Life” is practically a lullaby and “In Repair” is the kind of mainstream pop song that Mayer fans from way back will expect from him.

It’s “I’m Going To Find Another You” that stands out completely. What could be his perspective after a bad break-up has lyrics that are both heartbreakingly sad and amusingly bitter - And if I’m forced to find another/ I hope she looks like you/ And she’s nicer too. The short album closing song is enough to make you keep in the back of your mind that you don’t want to piss this songwriter off.

With John Mayer staying on the steady climb he’s been on since he started his career, it’s easy to understand why some are already saying he could be one of the most important singer/songwriters of his generation. His ability to captivate audiences through his songs is something most musicians only wish they could accomplish.
